Book Awards & Recommended Reading Lists
ALA Notable Children's Books - each year a the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) identifies the best of the best in children's books.
Batchelder Awards - given to an American publisher for a children's book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States, and subsequently translated into English and published in the United States.
Caldecott Medal Winners - honors the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
Coretta Scott King Book Awards - given to African American authors and illustrator for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions, the award titles promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream of a pluralistic society.
Geisel (Theodor Seuss) Award - given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year.
Gryphon Award - given annually for "the title that best exemplifies those qualities that successfully bridge the gap in difficulty between books for reading aloud to children and books for practiced readers".
Newbery Medal & Honor Books - honors the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
Pura Belpre Medal Award Books - presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
Laura Ingalls Wilder Award - honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.
Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal - awarded to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational book published in English during the preceding year.
Tomas Rivera Book Award - to recognize and honor authors and illustrators that create quality children's literature depicting the Mexican-American experience.
